Understanding Silicone Breast Implants

While the end results is often the same or very similar, there are important differences to understand between silicone breast implants and saline breast implants. Silicone breast implants are the popular choice for these patients. Another big advantage of silicone implants is they are much less likely to ripple. The ripple effect occasionally seen in saline implants makes the implants look rippled mostly when the woman moves about and is more noticeable in patients that had less breast tissue to begin with. Silicone breast implants are very unlikely to ripple because of the consistency of the implant.

However, there are a few disadvantages to silicone breast implants that Dr. Hovsepian makes each of his patients aware of during the consultation process. For starters, silicone implants are generally more expensive because the materials are more difficult to create than the materials used in saline implants. In addition, silicone implants can be more difficult to work with and can require a slightly larger incision.

The biggest disadvantage of silicone implants is the severity of potential complications such as if the implant ruptures. If a silicone implant ruptures, it may not be immediately noticeable. Silicone implants are very, very resilient to rupturing but if they do, they drain slowly. There is no evidence leaking silicone implants causes long-term internal damage but a leaking implant can result in breast pain and will change the size of the implant.
