Thinking About Having a Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a procedure that removes some tissue and skin from the breasts to reduce the size of the breasts, and sometimes decreasing the size of the areola. This surgery is perfect for women are looking to relieve any pain or physical discomfort that often comes with larger breasts.
Breast Reductions will alter your appearance. Mostly your proportions and the shape of your breasts. Smaller breasts make it easier to find clothing that fits well and will increase confidence when wearing something like a swimsuit. With a breast reduction, some physical activities that you weren’t able to participate in, such as sports, may become an option for you with a breast reduction.
To perform the procedure, Dr. Hovsepian will make one or more incisions to begin removing excess tissue and skin. The incisions will be closed with stitches, and in some cases, the nipple and areola will have to be removed in order to reshape the breasts. Once everything is repositioned, Dr. Hovsepian will then replace the nipple in the proper place.
In some cases, if the only problem is excess breast tissue and not excess skin, liposuction is enough for a breast reduction.
The procedure is done in the hospital or surgical center, with general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes anywhere between 3 and 5 hours. In some cases, you may have to stay overnight.
After your surgery you will have to wear a special surgical bra to help support your new breasts and reduce swelling. Stitches are typically removed within one to two weeks, and you can return to normal activities in about two weeks. You will have visible scars, but they are usually positioned by the surgeon in areas that you can hide with clothing and swimsuits.
As with any procedure there are certain risks. Such as scarring, unevenly placed nipples or breasts, loss of feeling in the nipples, and the inability to breast-feed after surgery. Some women can still breast-feed but it depends on what type of reduction was performed. These are all things you should discuss with your Beverly Hills plastic surgeon before undergoing a breast reduction.
