Beverly Hills Gynecomastia Surgery, Male Breast Reduction
Gynecomastia, also known as male breast reduction, is a condition in which firm breast tissue develops in males and may become present in one or both sides of the breast. Gynecomastia can range from men who never lost the small amount of puffiness they had on their chest during puberty to men that have excessive breast tissue.
What causes gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is usually caused by changes in hormones during: birth, puberty, or in adulthood. The imbalance of estrogen and testosterone in the body can cause gynecomastia. In adults; aging, alcohol, drugs, medications, and diseases can affect hormones. Many men are also unaware of the fact that gynecomastia can also be and adverse effect of steroids taken for body building purposes, where many cases of rapid growth of breast tissue have been seen.
How to correct gynecomastia?
There are two common methods for treating gynecomastia, excision and liposuction. Gynecomastia surgeries can be done with local anesthesia in conjunction with a mild sedative, IV sedation or general anesthesia. Depending on how much glandular tissue is present, Dr. Hovsepian will decide on which procedure would best fit your needs. For example, liposuction is an ideal procedure to remove fat, when the fat is soft and spread throughout the breast. For liposuction there is usually a small incision in the armpit or on the areola. These incisions are very inconspicuous. On the other hand, in cases where there is a large amount of firm glandular tissue, an excision in combination with liposuction may be used. If an excision is required, the incision will be placed around the lower half of your areola, for concealment.
What is the recovery process for gynecomastia surgery?
Gynecomastia recovery is fairly quick with mild discomfort if any. Patients describe their discomfort similar to that of having a difficult workout. It is recommended that after your surgery you keep physical activities to a minimum for the first few weeks. After surgery, a compression garment or tight fitting T-shirt is used to keep the chest compressed to reduce swelling and to achieve optimal results.
